The ITM and the Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS) launched a new translational research training program in October 2017 that offers more awards, a new curriculum, and stipend funding to offset tuition and living expenses. With the launch of the new TL1 Postdoctoral Program in Clinical Research and Medical Informatics, participants from any of the six ITM institutes can now choose either a clinical research or medical informatics pathway and take advantage of the corresponding master’s degree programs at the University of Chicago and Rush. Participants will also take advantage of grant writing workshops, translational research seminars, networking opportunities, and more during their time in the program. Stipends are awarded in line with the National Research Service Award (NRSA) levels, starting at about $43,000 and increasing to about $58,000 based on years of experience. Participants’ home departments will supplement these stipends for clinical fellows to meet their actual salary/stipend level as set by the Office of Graduate Medical Education, and the TL1 program and its degree program partners will also provide additional funding and scholarships to fully cover tuition and fees for the three master’s programs outlined in the RFA. Applications are now being accepted on a rolling basis until all slots are full. Three one-year slots and three two-year slots are available to start before June 30, 2018. There are also three two-year slots being filled for a July 1, 2018, start. The new program supports students in the following areas: Questions? *Information as of 2017.
We want to support students working in any area of translational science that’s emerging or exciting. Sometimes that means direct-to-patient research, but other times it means direct-to-market research, like bringing a new technology to a hospital.
