A basic knowledge of the microbiome is crucial to clinical research. During Innovation Fest 2017, join UChicago’s Microbiome Center leadership and ITM investigators Jack Gilbert, PhD, John Alverdy, MD, & Eugene Chang, MD, at the first annual Microbiome Workshop. This course will help you develop the tools you need to perform microbiome-related research by introducing you to the resources and people leading microbiome research in order to improve understanding, build clinical skills, and improve patient care. Speakers range from experts in microbiome science, biology, and bioinformatics to clinicians who are using the microbiome to inform and practice in departments of surgery and medicine.

This workshop, hosted by ITM’s partner MATTER, is for entrepreneurs who are looking to collaborate with an academic medical center to provide a proof-of-concept, demonstrate product efficacy, or collect data for a pilot project. The ITM’s Associate Director, Sam Volchenboum, MD, PhD, MS, will provide insights into how to navigate the process, including determining the kind of relationship to seek, the types of data that are available, the right contacts to make, and how best to approach academic institutions and foster relationships with academic researchers. He’ll also share his experience choosing and engaging with relevant stakeholders, taking into consideration privacy and security concerns, the basics of informed consent, and institutional review boards. Come learn how to ensure a successful collaboration, and also how to leverage it.
